About The Case of Samuel
After a two-year journey via the ‘three stages of hell’ Samuel, a 15 year old refugee from Eritrea, finally makes it to Europe. He is unconscious when picked up at the Italian shoreline. Someone writes a random date of birth on his paperwork: 01/01/2001. When he arrives in the Netherlands, the sixteen-year-old is considered an adult and ends up living on the streets. A reconstruction of a gruesome story. Searching for the truth, and Europe’s part. The real Samuel watches, comments and corrects.

“Together with Dutch actor Adam Kissequel, we tried to reconstruct the story of Samuel. We tried to find out what can’t and what should be said, what can’t and what has to be shown.
How can we tell a gruesome story like Samuels? At what point is a story no longer the reality? And what is Europe’s part in this story?

About Lara Staal
Lara Staal (curator, theatre maker, researcher, writer) is interested in how theatre can be a platform for political reflection and mobilisation, and forging alliances between different domains.
Since 2018, she has been working at NTGent with journalists, politicians, academics, and artists on a series about truth, faith, beauty, justice, and pride.
In 2021 ‘Dissident’ premiered, a piece about young ‘troublemakers’ lecturing the audience on what’s wrong with today’s educational system.
About The Festival
The Segal Center Film Festival on Theatre and Performance (FTP) is an annual event showcasing films drawn from the world of theatre and performance. The festival presents experimental, emerging, and established theatre artists and filmmakers from around the world to audiences and industry professionals. The 7th annual festival will focus on work for the screen created by theatre artists during the Time of Corona. The festival will be held digitally from March 1st – 15th 2022.
