About Blue Valiant
A beautiful, but untameable, blue roan horse becomes the catalyst for an emotional journey for three very different people: a wily stable owner, a bereaved woman and a refugee young girl. Filmed outside on a farm with the horse played on piano in a field by the composer, Arthur Rosen, “Blue Valiant” is a story of the importance of forgiveness, of self and others. Major American stage actors George Bartenieff & Kathleen Chalfant star in roles crafted especially for them. Introducing Millie Ortiz.

“Among the co-scourges of the pandemic is the rise in opioid related over-dose deaths. My play “Blue Valiant” addresses loss, grief, and the unexpected healing that comes through attention to others. For me, this play was a way of acknowledging the healing power of those most gracious equine creatures and the timeless wisdom that arises from inter-species communication on an endangered planet. It was also a way of writing specifically for and working with valued collaborators over decades, the magnificent, major American actors Kathleen Chalfant and George Bartenieff, in roles crafted especially for them, and the rest of the our creative team.
“The untold personal losses experienced during the pandemic, make the story more immediate, universal and meaningful.
“Between access to vaccines and the Delta and Omicron variants, we rehearsed in a room with many windows overlooking a garden. We filmed two live performances before full audiences, outside, on an organic farm in the midst of a Memorial Day Weekend of drenching rains that cancelled our dress rehearsal; a downpour that stopped only long enough each day for the play to be done two nights in a row, as the sun set. We filmed with four cameras and edited from the two performances. The result is live performance as a film. A unique form for an absolutely unique and treasured pandemic artistic experience,” -Karen Malpede

About Karen Malpede, Author/Director, Theater Three Collaborative, George Bartenieff, producer/actor.
Theater Three Collaborative, founded 1995 by actor/producer George Bartenieff and playwright/director, Karen Malpede, creates new poetic-language theater of witness plays. TTC is known as one of downtown New York’s most fearless, necessary theaters. Malpede is award-winning author of 22 plays on topics from the US torture program, the war in Iraq, to the climate emergency. She is author/editor of groundbreaking theater books. She teaches theater & environmental justice at John Jay College, CUNY.
About The Festival
The Segal Center Film Festival on Theatre and Performance (FTP) is an annual event showcasing films drawn from the world of theatre and performance. The festival presents experimental, emerging, and established theatre artists and filmmakers from around the world to audiences and industry professionals. The 7th annual festival will focus on work for the screen created by theatre artists during the Time of Corona. The festival will be held digitally from March 1st – 15th 2022.
