BIPAM in association with Indonesian Dramatic Playreading Festival (IDRF) presents a play reading of censored parts in 3 plays from 3 Southeast Asian countries, whether it is caused by government sanction or self-censorship. The three excerpts – “INSURGENCY” by Elangovan, “Suksesi” by Nano Riantiarno, and “History Class” written by Prajak Kongkirati – were translated and read in a transnational and transcultural context.
SUKSESI (Succession) by Nano Riantiarno, Indonesia. It was written in 1990 and was banned after ten rounds of performances.

INSURGENCY is the first of 10 scenes in the banned play “SMEGMA” by Elangovan, Singapore. SMEGMA, along with two other works by Elangovan, were banned because of their sensitive content.

HISTORY CLASS written by Prajak Kongkirati for the project “What We Talk About When We Don’t Talk About the Elephant in the Room” by Wichaya Artamat, Thailand, where the entire scene was opted out, leaving behind only a small modified part by the director that looked nothing like the original.

About Thanaphon Accawatanyu and Irfanuddien Ghozali
Thanaphon Accawatanyu (left)
A Bangkok-based director and a playwright, graduated from the faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University. His works focus on state violence against its own people in all shapes and forms.
Irfanuddien Ghozali (right)
A theatre director and actor based in Yogyakarta Indonesia. He has a background in sociology, and theatre. Since 2012, he has been working on the production of a play based on the history of a specific environment.
About The Festival
The Segal Center Film Festival on Theatre and Performance (FTP) is an annual event showcasing films drawn from the world of theatre and performance. The festival presents experimental, emerging, and established theatre artists and filmmakers from around the world to audiences and industry professionals. The 7th annual festival will focus on work for the screen created by theatre artists during the Time of Corona. The festival will be held digitally from March 1st – 15th 2022.
